The quality and accuracy of our public transport datasets are key to our success as a business. Each time a public transport network changes to serve the needs of the people, we need to update our dataset to incorporate those changes - what we refer to as “data maintenance”. Our team in Dar es Salaam is hiring a Data Project Manager to be permanently based in the city, and take care of all the activities which enable this data maintenance day-to-day and week-to-week. It’s an exciting opportunity for someone with project management experience and a passion for making their home city easier to navigate by the millions of public transport users who live and work there.

Overview of activities & responsibilities

You’ll be a natural problem solver, comfortable taking responsibility for keeping our dataset for Dar es Salaam as up-to-date as possible. Doing this will include the need for you to:

  • monitor news, media, social networks, and announcements by transport authorities to anticipate changes to the transport network ahead of time.
  • work with our team to understand who the key people in both private and publicly owned public transport operations are, then build and maintain relationships with these important stakeholders.
  • arrange for new routes or changes to the network be re-mapped, or for updates to our existing dataset to be made on the basis of confirmed information which you will collect and verify.
  • be hands-on at times and undertake some mapping work yourself, but will also manage a small, temporary team of people who will do this.
  • manage a team, including leading training sessions, providing feedback on the quality of data collected, managing payments, and dealing with daily queries from teammates who are doing work across the city in a given day.
  • work closely with the team who cleans and validates the data which you and your team are collecting, catching any errors and allowing us to be confident in the complete accuracy of our datasets.

We are looking for someone who is always thinking of how processes could be made quicker, or improved. You will have the scope to define the best ways of maintaining our dataset for your city, and will be always looking for ways to improve how we do this.

Our ideal Data Project Manager's skills and experience

Required:

  • Relevant experience working as a project manager, or with project coordination, including managing budgets. We’re looking for someone who is very organised, and able to look after many moving parts at the same time.
  • Experience managing a small team. You enjoy building relationships and have a knack for getting the best out of others.
  • Good written and spoken Swahili and English, and a strong communicator generally. You’re comfortable working with people from different backgrounds and cultures and know how to adapt your style to the people you’re speaking with.
  • Good understanding of Google Sheets and/or Excel. In general you’ll be computer literate and tech savvy.

We'll provide guidance on the following, but if you already have some of these it will be a plus:

  • A rich understanding of the workings and operations of the local public transport industry and network in your city.
  • Data validation / processing experience.
  • Familiarity with geo-spatial relationships and orientation tools (Google Maps, Google Earth, ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.), map and image interpretation.
