The Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) an institution of The Aga Khan
Development
Network, completed a major phase II expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es
Salaam in 2018.
This expansion aimed at improving the Hospital's quality of facilities and
infrastructure to become an ultramodern 170 bed facility in order to increase
its capacity as a provider of high-quality medical care leading to tertiary
care, referral and teaching hospital.
The Phase II development focused on expanding key clinical services including a
comprehensive cardiology programme, oncology services, and neurosciences, as
well as the expansion of orthopedics and trauma, diagnostic imaging, critical
care, and women and child health programmes.
The Hospital is JCI Accredited (achieved a level of quality and patient service
that is equal to the best hospitals in the world) and the teaching site for The
Aga Khan University, which offers postgraduate medical education programs
leading to Master’s of Medicine in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery
and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
It is also an accredited internship site. As part of the integrated health
systems approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities that
are located across Tanzania. Currently, 20 such clinics have been established
across the country and linked the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.
We are seeking for enthusiastic, qualified and experienced Clinical
Nutritionist as shown below:
POSITION: PART-TIME CLINICAL NUTRITIONIST (1 POST)
POSITION SUMMARY
Responsible for planning and supervising the preparation of meals for patients,
and confer with physicians
and other medical professional about each patient’s nutritional needs and
preferences. To coordinate diet therapy and nutritional education programs,
including teaching patients and their families about specific diets to be
followed. He/she should also instruct groups or individuals about the
nutritional care of conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and pregnancy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assesses and interprets nutritional needs of patient
through interviews, patient rounds, physician notes, laboratory reports, and
other pertinent information.
• Develops nutritional care plan for patients, and monitors adherence to
prescribed diet.
• Ensures that health nutrition education are given to the patients and or
relative.
• Computes nutritional value of recipes when necessary.
• Evaluates appropriateness of diet order for diagnosis and recommends diet
order changes as indicated.
• Charts patient dietary information; completes required
forms for each patient; provides dietary information to patients and members of
the health care team; may conduct educational classes such breast feeding
support programmes.
• Provides substitutions if patient is unable to eat the meal provided, in
accordance with diet restrictions
• Provide outpatient dietary consultations through regular diet clinics and
through special package.
• Provide nutritional support towards certifications such as baby friendly
hospital initiative.
• Work with relevant teams to expand the range of nutritional therapy services
provided at AKH.
• Participate in the development relevant documentation such
as policies, procedures and protocols that enhance nutritional care.
• Maintains updated and necessary patient education materials and nutrition
references and textbooks.
• Participates in patient care plan meetings, support groups as requested or
deemed necessary. Any other roles assigned by the Supervisor.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum B.Sc. in Nutrition/Dietician.
• Minimum three (3) years experience in hospital setting.
• Comprehensive knowledge and application of nutrition support services.
• Problem solving through learning and application of the
historical, current, and emerging aspects of the dietetics practice.
• Expresses commitment to nutrition practice and confidentiality.
• Possesses good interpersonal skills and displays positive energy to be a good
team member.
• Reacts to criticism positively and utilizes it for self-development and
growth.
• Ability to organize work load and identify priorities appropriately.
• Is prompt and reflexive towards clinical emergencies.
• Ensure tact, empathy and a caring towards patients and the families they
served.
• Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and in writing
• Must be regular and punctual on work with > 96% attendance.
• Keeps him/her self-well-groomed and observes the uniform code at all times.
• Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or
others in a professional manner.
