Established In 2000, the Barbro Johansson Model Girls’ Secondary School (Barbro School) Is now In Its 22nd year, running from Form 1 to Form VI with a total capacity for 800 students. It was established as a high standard boarding girls’ secondary school to promote girls’ quality education in academics and groom them to become leaders. The school Is located 28 km from Dar es Salaam City Center, at Luguruni campus, some 3 kms off Morogoro road, Just behind the Ubungo Municipal offices.

The school follows the standard Tanzania National Secondary Education Curriculum and Is registered by the Ministry of Education, with registration No. S1062. The teaching methodology seeks to promote students’ innovations and to make education participatory, Interesting and exciting. It Is owned and run by the Barbro Johansson Girls’ Education Trust (JOHA-TRUST), which was established In 1998, as a not-for- profit organization, to promote high standard girls schools and training centres In Tanzania and eventually across Africa In partnership with governments and other donors Interested to support scholarships for needy students to access Its facilities. A sister support group In Sweden mobilizes scholarships for needy girls. The first Headmistress of the school will be retiring this year 2022. These TOR provide key information on the position of the Headmistress, her roles and responsibilities, to assist In the recruitment of a new one.
Roles and responsibilities
In general, reporting to the Board of Trustees of JOHA TRUST, the Headmistress will provide the overall leadership and management of the school, carrying out administrative tasks, managing students, teachers and staff, and creating a peaceful environment to achieve the mission of learning and educating at the highest level of standards. In particular, the Headmistress will undertake the following duties:
- Serves as the direct liaison between the school Board and JOHA TRUST board of Trustees and Implement solutions, resolutions, decisions and directives of the Board;
- Elaborate the school work objectives through annual school work plans and budgets, developing frameworks and procedures that will Implement school curriculum practices;
- Guide the day to day school business and oversee all operations of the school; and promoting effective teaching and learning across the school;
- Develop and promote effective communication systems with students, staff, parents and the wider community and act as a Liaison officer between the School Board, Government, parents, surrounding community and various education stakeholder and maintain a good relationship with these entitles;
- Represent the School when necessary within the community and media as a School’s spokesperson.
- Monitor the Implementation of school plans and prepare yearly narrative reports, coordinate and supervise the Implementation of required planned School Programmes.
- Co-ordinate recruitment of both students and staff, prepare all the appointment letters, contracts and TOR for each Individual staff.
- Maintain highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.
- Serve as a Secretary to the School Board meetings;
- Liaise promotion and fundraising activities with donors and other partners ; and
- Undertake all other relevant assignments and duties as may be directed by the JOHA TRUST board of Trustees
The position requires a leader of integrity who Is self-aware and can prioritize self-development of both students and staff, focused on vision and mission, a strategic thinker and Innovator, action oriented, ethical with effective communication skills. Specifically
- Masters degree In education or related field, with a bias towards pedagogical profession. The applicants should have scored a GPA of not less than 3.0 In their first degree.
- A minimum of teachlng/leadershlp experience of 5 years, with sound understanding of adolescent girls Including educational framework as well as the on-golng reforms In the education sector;
- Must be computer literate and proficient In the Micro Soft office applications.
- Must possess an excellent command of both spoken and written English and Klswahlll; and proven ability of writing clearly and effectively.
- Must have ability to multitask, punctual and ability to deliver tasks within specified time frames.
Remuneration
Attractive remuneration package will be given to a successful candidate according to qualifications and experience, accommodation within the School compound is mandatory, gratuity after every 2 years of contract and Health Insurance covering dependents.
Terms of Contract:
A fixed term two year contract, automatically renewable but with a probation period of 1 year at the beginning depending on performance.
