Tanga Regional Referral Hospital is situated along the shores of Indian Ocean. To the East is boundaries with Assistant Medical Officers School and Nursing Training Centre to the South. It is within 3 km from the town centre.
Tanga Region has the population of about 2,225,369 people. This population expected to to get a health referral service from their Health facilities direct to Tanga Regional Referral Hospital.
The Hospital has the capacity of attending more than 400 patients per day at Outpatient Department (OPD) and bed capacity of 600 beds for Inpatient Department with average of 70 admission per day.

To have improved quality, efficient, equitable and affordable essential patients’/clients’ care in Tanga Region especially in Tanga City. Before the construction of the present Regional Referral Hospital, Liebels Hotel which used to be opposite the Sea View Hotel was rented and temporarily used as a hospital.
The building remained as a hospital for only a short time as Dr. Alexander Berker had already drawn plans of the Spacious Government Hospital still in use today.
