Founded in 1998 as a non-governmental organization under the Trustees Incorporation Ordinance (Cap 375), CORDS Tanzania traces its roots back to the Pastoralist Research and Development Project (PARDEP) conducted in 1997.
After its registration as an NGO, CORDS initiated a set of activities that evolved out of felt needs of the local communities generated through a participatory approach. Initially focused on the traditional Maasai pastoralist districts of Kiteto, Monduli, Ngorongoro, and Simanjiro in the Arusha Region, Northern Tanzania, CORDS emerged from the need identified in the research findings to establish a permanent body addressing the development needs of pastoral communities.
To work for holistic socio economic Development and to fight against all threats to livelihoods security (Marginalization, Injustice, Oppression, Gender inequality, Poverty, Hunger and Ignorance). CORDS envisages a strong and vibrant pastoral Society that has a strong voice and wide range of choices over its own development and destiny.
The objective is to empower community members to adapt to climate change and development.
The goal is to promote awareness and advocate for equal education access for pastoralist children.
