1. Background
The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a parastatal organization established by Act of Parliament No. 23 of 1979 (CAP.59, R.E.2002) and became operational in 1980. NIMR Mwanza Research Centre is one of the NIMR centers located in the Mwanza region. The center is currently conducting research on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and other diseases of public health importance.
NIMR is looking for qualified, experienced, and well-motivated personnel to fill the following positions:
2. Parent App for Early Years
NIMR, in collaboration with the University of Oxford (UK), the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), and REPSSI, is conducting a feasibility individual randomized controlled trial of the Parent App for the Early Years. This study includes three linked sub-studies recruiting caregivers with children in three different age groups:
- Third trimester of pregnancy to 9 months
- 10 months to 4 years 11 months
- 5 years to 9 years
The study aims to assess patterns of engagement with the app and identify barriers and facilitators to participation. It seeks to determine how parenting programs can be delivered over digital platforms to vulnerable families without costly resources or logistics. The research will be conducted in the Dar es Salaam region.
3. Job Position: Project Coordinator (1 Post)
- Reporting: The post holder will report to the Project Principal Investigator.
- Duties and Responsibilities:
I. Assist in developing research protocols, pretesting, and piloting data collection tools.
II. Train and build the capacity of junior project staff, including data collectors.
III. Plan and supervise data collection in the Dar es Salaam region.
IV. Conduct periodic quality checks on collected data.
V. Liaise with the local PI and the data management team for data processing.
VI. Monitor data collection for saturation of salient themes.
VII. Write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
VIII. Prepare progress and final evaluation reports.
IX. Ensure proper utilization of project resources and properties, including funds and vehicles.
X. Collaborate with the Accounts unit to complete financial reports.
XI. Supervise workshops and other project activities.
XII. Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the supervisor. - Qualifications and Competence:
I. Master’s degree in public health, epidemiology, or early childhood development.
II. Experience in digital intervention research and child development.
III. Proficiency in English and Kiswahili (written and oral).
IV. Strong managerial, organizational, and report-writing skills.
V. Experience in publishing peer-reviewed research. - Terms of Engagement: One-year employment contract, renewable based on performance.
- Duty Station: NIMR Mwanza Centre with regular visits to Dar es Salaam.
- Compensation: A competitive salary will be offered per the project budget.
4. Bright-SAM Research Project
NIMR, in collaboration with Rigshospitalet (Danish National Hospital), the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the University of Liverpool, is conducting a clinical trial to test novel ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) and a psychosocial stimulation program. The trial will assess cognitive and nutritional outcomes among malnourished children in the Mwanza region.
4.1 Job Position: Clinical Officer (5 Posts)
- Duties:
I. Conduct clinical examinations.
II. Collect clinical data using approved questionnaires.
III. Perform other study-related tasks as assigned by supervisors. - Qualifications:
I. Diploma in Medicine from a recognized institution and a practicing license from the Medical Council of Tanganyika.
II. At least two years of clinical research experience.
III. Proficiency in Kiswahili and English (written and oral).
IV. Computer literacy and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
4.2 Job Position: Assistant Nursing Officer (6 Posts)
- Duties:
I. Perform phlebotomy and clinical examinations.
II. Measure anthropometric and blood pressure data for children.
III. Conduct nutritional screening for malnourished children.
IV. Administer data collection tools using electronic devices.
V. Perform other study-related tasks as assigned. - Qualifications:
I. Diploma-level training in nursing and a valid practicing license.
II. Two years of experience in nursing or clinical research.
III. Experience in pediatric blood sampling and anthropometric measurements.
IV. Proficiency in Kiswahili and English (written and oral).
V. Computer literacy and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training.
5. Terms of Service
- One-year contract, renewable based on performance and mutual agreement.
- Duty Station: NIMR Mwanza Centre with study site visits.
- Compensation: Competitive salary per the project budget.
