Maternity Africa is based in Arusha Region, Northern
Tanzania. It seeks to improve maternal health outcomes for vulnerable and
marginalized women and girls of childbearing age living in poverty across rural
Tanzania.
Maternity Africa has a formal agreement with the Ministry of
Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC) to
provide medical services on its behalf. Maternity Africa also has a Memorandum
of Understanding with Arusha District Council to provide maternal health
services, free of charge to vulnerable and marginalized women. Maternity
Africa also works with other non-government organisations (NGOs) to provide
free of charge, good quality evidence-based maternal health services and
advocate for women’s health and wellbeing.
Maternity Africa’s base at Kivulini Maternity Centre strives
towards being a ‘centre of excellence’ that also strengthens the knowledge,
skills, experience, competence and confidence of national health care
workers. It does this through training and mentoring of staff engaged in
service delivery. Maternity Africa also offers placements for tertiary
level students from some of Tanzania’s universities and colleges.
Maternity Africa offers prevention of and treatment for
obstetric fistula. Prevention services are provided through maternity
care for early pregnancy complications, antenatal, birthing and postnatal
care. This includes 24-hour obstetric emergency cover and on-site
transitional neonatal care for newborn babies. Fistula treatment services are
provided through surgical intervention for fistula and other birth-induced
injuries. Maternity Africa also offers a comprehensive family planning
service to inpatients and the local community.
Maternity Africa is registered in Tanzania as a
Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), under the the terms and conditions of the
Non Governmental Orgaizations Act, 2002. It has registration number
00NGO/R2/000524.

POSITION: ASSISTANT TECHNOLOGIST
Requires understanding of the Health Laboratory Operating procedures and guidelines, high organisation skills, working under minimal supervision, knowledge, experience and skills of tests performed in health laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- To perform routine tests in assigned area of the laboratory as per current SOP
- To ensure specimens collected and received are documented or managed properly before analysis
- To evaluate specimen adequacy for test performance
- To perform and document preventative and corrective maintenance, function checks.
- To perform, evaluate and document quality control data and assure that patient results are reported when quality control does not pass
- To ensure safe working environment in the working Clinical Laboratory
- To perform instrument troubleshooting to correct problems
- Refer client’s inquiries to relevant clinicians
- To ensure specimens collected and received are well documented
- Ensure timely provision of various reports to laboratory
- To ensure valid results are verified before dispatch and are sent to the clinics/wards in a timely fashion
- Draw blood from all Booking patients for Antenatal clinic, see specific booking blood request form
- Be able to give appropriate counselling for HIV testing
- Liaise with procurement officer on a timely basis for procurement of reagents
- Maintain a Blood bank, with emergency blood available whenever possible.
- Remain a confidential approach to patients’ blood results
- Maintain the cleanliness and order of the laboratory
- Use universal precautions when drawing and disposing of samples
- Perform any other duties as directed by the supervisor
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Certificate in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Health Laboratory Sciences from a recognised Institution.
- Minimum of 4 years of professional work experience.
- Must have enrolled licences with Health Laboratory Practitioner Council.
- A proven ability to work in a team under minimal supervision, well written and oral communication skills in English and Swahili are also required.
- Must be knowledgeable about parasitology, biochemistry, haematology and microbiology.
- Strong analytical skills
