INTRODUCTION
The Tanzania Startup Association (TSA) is a not-for-profit,
membership-based organization
representing over 800 startup members, primarily youth-owned
businesses, across
Tanzania. By working collaboratively with government
institutions, academia, development
partners, and private-sector organizations, TSA aims to
foster innovation, create jobs, and
drive economic growth. Startups in Tanzania are leveraging
emerging technologies to
address challenges in key sectors such as healthcare,
agriculture, and education while
contributing significantly to the nation’s development.
Building on the success of previous
reports, TSA’s Tanzania Startup Ecosystem Study 2024/25 aims
to provide actionable
insights to inform policies, catalyze investment, and
support the ecosystem's growth on a
global scale.
We invite passionate individuals to join the Tanzania
Startup Ecosystem Study 2024/25 as
Research Assistant Volunteers. Volunteers will assist with
data collection (questionnaires,
interviews, focus group discussions, and desk research) and
data analysis (geographic,
financial, survey, and benchmarking data) and report
writing. This is an opportunity to

national policies and strategies while

OBJECTIVES
The study’s overall objective is to track, assess, and
quantify the growth and developments
of Tanzania’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem to
inform the annual status and
performance for 2024. Furthermore, the study utilises data
to draw insights that guide the
formulation of interventions aimed at addressing challenges
and maximising identified
opportunities. Specifically, the study aims to:
1. Identify and present critical developments, including
existing challenges,
opportunities, and reforms implemented in 2024 to address
these challenges and
capitalise on opportunities.
2. Identify and profile key ecosystem actors to track the
ecosystem’s growth in 2024,
highlighting their roles in bridging identified gaps and
strengthening the
entrepreneurial landscape.
3. Propose actionable policy and non-policy recommendations
for further interventions
to address challenges, unlock opportunities, and promote
sustainable growth across
the startup ecosystem.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The study will focus on engaging stakeholders from Tanzania
mainland and Zanzibar,
ensuring balanced representation across the country.
Although the research team will not
travel nationwide, TSA will leverage its network of regional
partners and collaborators to
collect localised data and insights. This decentralised
approach allows for efficient and
inclusive data collection while maintaining the study’s
relevance to the diverse dynamics of
the Tanzanian startup ecosystem.The Tanzania Startup
Association (TSA), in collaboration
with key stakeholders across the Tanzanian startup
ecosystem, will conduct this study.
These stakeholders include the Ministry of Information,
Communication and Information
Technology (MICIT), the Ministry of Investment, Industry,
and Trade (MOIP), the Tanzania
Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), and the ICT
Commission (ICTC).
Additional contributions will be sought from government
ministries, departments, and
agencies (MDAs), development partners, higher learning
institutions, research organisations,
entrepreneurship and innovation support organisations
(EISOs), private sector players,
investors, and key ecosystem actors such as entrepreneurs,
venture capitalists, and angel
investors. This diverse collaboration ensures that the study
captures a broad spectrum of
perspectives, making it inclusive and comprehensive.
VOLUNTEER ROLES: DATA
COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Responsibilities
• Administer questionnaires to startups, support
organizations, and key stakeholders.
• Facilitate Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to collect
qualitative insights.
• Conduct semi-structured interviews with stakeholders,
including MDAs, EISOs, and
startups.
• Perform desk research to review policies, reports, and
publications.
• Analyze geographic data using tools like QGIS,
OpenStreetMap, and MapChart.
• Present data effectively using visualization platforms
such as Tableau, Power BI, and
Excel.
• Prepare detailed summaries and insights for the study’s
final report.
• Create infographics and visual aids to enhance report
clarity and accessibility.
Skills and Qualifications
• Strong communication skills for engaging diverse
stakeholders.
• Excellent organizational skills to manage surveys and
interviews.
• Ability to maintain neutrality and confidentiality during
discussions.
• Familiarity with data collection tools like Google Forms,
Kobo Toolbox, or
SurveyMonkey.
• Proficiency in at least one data analysis tool for
quantitative data.
• Familiarity with qualitative analysis tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with
attention to detail for ensuring data
quality.
• Knowledge of statistical methods and data visualization
techniques.
